Nathan Maharaj is a lifelong bookseller. He is presently the Director of Content Marketing for Rakuten Kobo, where he oversees book blogging in multiple languages and produces the Kobo in Conversation podcast. He has delivered talks to audiences at BookNet Canada’s Tech Forum, CONTEC (Frankfurt Book Fair), IPG’s Publisher Summit, and Digital Book World, but what he’s most proud of are his appearances on the CanBPA covers panel where if memory serves he has always comported himself like a scholar and gentleman.

A long, long time ago, we can still remember … when the Canadian Book Professionals’ Association (CanBPA) held raucous events at pubs celebrating the hits and misses of the year in book covers! We thought, why not bring the band back together? Join the best and brightest cover designers working today, Gigi Lau (superb cover designer for Harlequin Trade and now Art Director for Tundra Book Group (PRH)), Natalie Olsen (freelancer extraordinaire and co-founder of Hingston & Olsen Publishing, makers of the Short Story Advent Calendar), Ingrid Paulson (indie press champion and proprietress of Gladstone Press), and Jazmin Welch (in-house Production Manager at Arsenal Pulp Press and director of her own fleck creative studio), plus panel moderator Steven Beattie of That Shakespearean Rag, as they debate what makes good design shine, revisit their best-of lists, and consider the covers that could have been. Spicing up the panel will be lifelong bookseller Nathan Maharaj, lending his take as a scholar and gentleman on CanBPA panels of yore.
