ebooks, beta testing, and the apocalypse

We expect ebooks to work like the web, but the fact is they don’t necessarily. By learning more about the reading systems we design ebooks for, we can start beta-testing new powerful features and designing better reader experiences. How do they implement pagination? How are user settings managed? Do they have default stylesheets? The truth is, we need to learn from the web. Only then can we can build a strong, open culture in which we step out of our comfort zone, experiment, share, and improve our craft.

Progressive enhancements make books progressive

While you may have already been using CSS 3 in your ebooks, EPUB 3 has not officially supported it. Sure, it worked but it wasn’t required to. So what you were doing was actually a progressive enhancement.
