Charles has over 20 years’ development experience, and has been a pioneer in accessible product development since 1993.
Over that time, Charles co-developed a human rights information system for Benetech’s Human Rights Program and developed accessible tools for its digital library for people with print disabilities, Bookshare. He also invented an accessible GPS system for the visually impaired that is used worldwide, begun at Carleton University and later brought to market by a company he co-founded, Sendero Group.
Charles currently co-chairs the accessibility task forces for both the W3C Digital Publishing Interest Group and the IDPF’s new EPUB 3.1 specification, where he helped write the new Accessibility 1.0 Specification for Conformance and Discovery along with the accompanying EPUB Accessibility Techniques document.
Under a Google Impact Challenge Award from Google’s charitable foundation, Google.org, DAISY has been building a ground-breaking accessibility certification process based on the new IDPF EPUB Accessibility 1.0 Specification.
